Reverse Osmosis – What You Need to Know…
How much do we really know about the water we are drinking?
We are advised to drink 6–8 glasses of water per day, but no one tells us which water is best, safest and healthiest.
There is a lot of conflicting information regarding the different sources and processes of drinking water and we would like to discuss these in our blog.
Reverse Osmosis is one of the most popular and effective ways of purifying water, removing harmful toxins and contaminants from water and making it clean for consumption. It is also a phenomenon as it is a way of desalinating seawater to make it safe for drinking. It cleans the water of lead, phosphate, arsenic, mercury, fluoride, chloride, cyanide, ammonia and bacteria that can be extremely harmful to your health. This has revolutionised things for people who do not have access to safe drinking water.
However, in addition to removing the harmful toxins, it also removes the majority of healthy minerals (TDS) that we require for optimum health and absorption. Water is an essential nutrient, but removing all the healthy minerals can actually make it unhealthy for us long term. Safe water does not necessarily mean it is completely healthy.
According to the World Health Organization, low mineral (TDS) drinking water produced by reverse osmosis or distillation is not suitable for long-term human consumption and, in fact, can create negative health effects for those consuming it. This lack of minerals may also impact the taste negatively for many people.
Here are some factors to take into consideration about Reverse Osmosis water:
RO water is better for cooking. It is a safe and environmentally friendly alternative to tap water and other bottled waters. It is safer for cancer patients as it contains no parasites or bacteria.
The water obtained through Reverse Osmosis is dead or neutral water, as it removes all minerals — good as well as bad. As a result, it generates water that is clean and safe but not necessarily healthy. Minerals in drinking water are essential to heart health and have been linked to lower mortality from heart disease and cancer. Removing most of the minerals from the water leaves it with an acidic pH. Acidity can cause many ailments and diseases in the body.
During the purification process, at least 50% of the water is wasted and flushed down the drain. Due to its complexity, Reverse Osmosis purifiers are usually harder to install and maintain, as drainage facilities for waste water need to be in place. Many shops that fill your drinking water bottles use Reverse Osmosis to clean the water.
The next time you fill up your bottle at your nearest water shop, ask them if their water is high in Total Dissolved Solids and what the alkaline level is. If you are drinking purified water, make sure you are also taking mineral supplements including Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Iron and Sodium, for health and wellbeing.
