The Spring Cleanse: Ditch the Synthetic Detoxes

Spring arrives and suddenly we’re surrounded by detoxes.

Detox teas. Powders. Juice cleanses. Supplements. Lemon-water concoctions. Programmes promising to flush, cleanse and reset everything winter apparently did to us.

But your body already has an incredibly sophisticated detoxification system of its own.

Your liver processes and breaks down substances your body doesn’t need. Your kidneys continuously filter your blood and remove waste through urine. Your digestive system and lungs play their part too.

They don’t switch off during winter and wait for September to rescue them.

What your body does need is the everyday support that allows these systems to function properly. And one of the simplest places to start is hydration.

Maybe Your Spring Reset Should Be Simpler

Winter has a way of changing our habits.

We spend more time indoors, move less, reach for warming drinks and comfort foods, and often simply don’t feel as thirsty when the weather is cold.

By the time Spring arrives, it’s understandable that many of us feel ready for a reset. But rather than jumping into an extreme cleanse, spring can be an opportunity to return to the fundamentals.

Good food. Movement. Fresh air. Quality sleep. And enough water.

Not particularly glamorous, but remarkably effective.

Hydration Does More Than Quench Your Thirst

Water is involved in virtually every major system in your body.

It helps regulate body temperature, supports digestion and circulation, transports nutrients, lubricates joints and helps the kidneys remove waste from the body.

Even mild dehydration can affect how you feel, including your concentration, alertness, mood and physical performance.

And thirst isn’t always the best reminder. By the time you actively feel thirsty, your body is already asking for water.

Building hydration into your daily routine is often far more effective than waiting until you realise you haven’t had a glass of water since breakfast.

Water Is More Than H₂O

Here’s where hydration becomes interesting.

The mineral composition of drinking water can vary significantly depending on where it comes from and how it has been treated.

Natural mineral water acquires minerals as it moves through underground rock and geological formations. These can include essential minerals such as magnesium and calcium.

Highly purified water, particularly water treated through processes such as reverse osmosis, may contain very low levels of dissolved minerals because the purification process removes them along with other substances.

Neither fact means you need to start calculating the mineral content of every glass you drink. Your diet remains the primary source of essential minerals.

But it does mean that what’s in your water is worth understanding.

Turn the bottle around occasionally. Look at the mineral composition. Check the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). See where the water comes from and how it has been treated.

Knowing what you drink is just as reasonable as knowing what you eat.

Try a Spring Hydration Reset

Forget complicated detox rules. Try a few simple habits this September instead.

1. Start Your Day With Water

You’ve gone several hours without drinking while you sleep, so make water one of the first things you reach for in the morning.

Have a glass before your first coffee and start replenishing fluids early in the day.

2. Keep Water Where You Can See It

On your desk. In your bag. Beside you while you work. In the car when you head out.

Sometimes the most effective healthy habit is simply making the healthy choice the easiest one.

3. Drink Consistently

Trying to compensate for barely drinking all day by downing litres of water in the evening isn’t a particularly useful hydration strategy.

Spread your water intake throughout the day and adjust it according to the weather, your activity levels and your individual needs.

4. Hydrate Around Movement

Spring means warmer days and, hopefully, more time outside.

Walking, running, gym, gardening, hiking or simply spending a hot afternoon outdoors can increase your fluid needs.

Take water with you rather than relying on finding some later.

5. Make Water Part of Socialising

Braai season is back.

Keep chilled still or sparkling water on the table alongside everything else. Water makes an easy, refreshing option between drinks and throughout a long afternoon in the sun.

Spring Cleaning, From the Inside Out

A spring reset doesn’t have to involve restriction, deprivation or a cupboard full of expensive products promising miraculous results.

Sometimes it’s simply about clearing out habits that aren’t serving you and returning to the ones that do.

Drink enough water.
Eat nourishing food.
Move your body.
Get outside.
Sleep well.
Make some space.

Your body already knows how to do an extraordinary amount of the rest.
